Leading your practice to greatness is all about how you behave and the input you have on the practice. Here, Nigel Jones discusses what makes a great leader and how making just the slightest change can have the biggest impact.
Do you lead?
The direction of the practice and practice team is based on your leadership style, your ambitions and your vision of the future; in essence, who you are.
Leadership is about stimulating people into taking action and leading them on a journey with you to achieve a goal, which is in no means an easy task. That’s why it is important to start from the beginning and know who you are and where you want to be.
Be aware of your natural leadership style, how you choose to lead in certain situations and capitalise on it.
Have a vision
This is your focal point so it’s THE most important aspect of leadership. Your vision will be personal to you and will derive from what it is you’re looking to achieve and the skills you have to achieve it.
Motivate and team build
People work best in cohesion. Having your team behind you is essential, not only to seamlessly achieve your goal but to enjoy achieving it. Great leaders play to theirs and other people’s strengths to motivate people and have a natural ability to read what another person needs and how to satisfy that need to the end goal.
Learn to be a great decision maker
Followers look for guidance from their leaders, so being able to make decisions and stand by them is a key attribute to being a great leader. This is not to say you should be inflexible once a decision has been made, but know when to adjust and when not to. Remember, always communicate decisions effectively, whether this is your decision or one made by the team.
With any great creation comes passion as passion often drives an idea forward. The key is to let your passion rub off on those around you, so they want to achieve the same things you do.
Many of you are probably thinking ‘You make it sound so simple, but it’s not so easy’, or ‘I don’t have time to lead’, but actually what you’re already doing is leading, these steps are simply there to guide you to being a great leader rather than just a good one.
