Remember your why

Happy New Year to you.

Let’s tip toe into 2023 without wakening its grumpy brother, 2022, or its long-lost cousin of 2022 and definitely not its evil stepsister, 2020.

The first weeks back in any New Year are often a bit ‘meh’ and sometimes include thoughts such as:

  • “Why am I here?”
  • “I need to change my life”
  • “How long until my holiday?”
  • “Yuck! It’s January!”

And they’re perfectly normal thoughts for the time of year. It’s cold and wet and the most recent Festive Season turned out to be the Monsoon Season too!

These factors, multiplied with what’s going on in this upside-down world, is leaving many people wondering ‘what next?’

So, let’s revisit YOUR WHY?

Several times a year I repeat the following statement, especially to young dentists and practice teams: ‘You have skills I am very envious of, genuinely envious.’

“You can heal people of pain (dental pain) and through your hands and minds, make a positive change to a person’s confidence with restorative and cosmetic dentistry.

So, when it’s cold and wet and the world seems to be becoming a crazier place by the week, through the above, you get to give back to your own little corner of the world.

Everyone has a WHY, so let this be YOUR WHY.

Remember the patients you have managed to help in your career thus far. Forget the moaners, the groaners and the downright grumpy. So many patients are very grateful you are their dentist/their hygienist/their dental team.

One of the key trends of 2022 I observed was the choice of how and where, the consumer spent their money after a few difficult years battling with the negativity in the world.

2023 is likely to be another year of people choosing where and what to spend their money on and choosing to spend it on what is important to them; what makes them feel that little bit better and that bit more confident. Therefore, your skills look likely to be in big demand once again.

So, remember YOUR WHY: the skills of healing pain and changing confidence… things I’m envious of.

Wishing you health, happiness and contentment in 2023.
