Success at the Bolton Practice Managers’ Conference

After the success of the first Practice Management Conference in Bolton on the 6th June, we caught up with Event Organiser Ruth Martin to find out a little bit more.

I’m so pleased the first Practice Management Conference went down a storm. After months of organising the event it was great to see all the delegates, speakers and sponsors descend into the Bolton Whites Hotel (home of the Bolton Wanderers Football Club) for a day filled with passionate and insightful presentations and informative demonstrations.

The event started with a gorgeous three course meal the evening before, overlooking the football pitch. Practice owners and managers who were staying at the hotel before the conference gathered with speakers, sponsors and of course the Practice Plan team, for an evening filled with good conversation and excellent food. All the hot subjects of the day were discussed, from the NHS contract, to Sheila Scott’s new book! It was a great way for everyone to get together before the conference and really relax into the Practice Plan spirit of things.

After a fun-filled night, it was on to business! Our very own Nigel Jones opened the event, with Sheila Scott hosting the day. Sheila, as always, managed to bring her own special brand of humour to the event and brought a smile to everyone’s faces.

Kevin Lewis from Dental Protection and Krishan Joshi from Dental Focus joined Nigel and Sheila as the key speakers. Kevin was up first and wowed with his presentation on working together as a practice to avoid litigation. He was followed by Nigel on the subject of how to create a measurement culture within your practice.

After lunch, Krishan Joshi delivered a memorable presentation. He was joined by Alfie Jones from Dental Focus – their passion for what they do really shone through! They created a blog post on the day and got the whole conference involved by using social media to get the post to number one on Google within 15 minutes – very impressive! It was a great demonstration of what can be done when you know how.

Sheila rounded off the day with an empowering look at how you can manage people’s behaviour and get the best from them. She did this by giving everyone at the conference a framework for achieving positive change.

Feedback from the conference has been excellent, with delegates really enjoying the added networking time, allowing them to chat at their tables and share their experiences, successes and suggestions with like-minded individuals. Here’s how Lisa Bainham, Practice Manager of The Old Surgery Dental Practice, summed up her day: ‘I have attended this conference for the last few years and each year it gets better and better. I will go back to my practice a better Manager!’
