The Welsh Government announcements

Considering a move towards private dentistry, whether a full or partial conversion, is a big decision and one that needs careful consideration.

For Welsh practices there are some major changes. From April 2026, the NHS contract will look very different:

  • UDAs will be gone – a new model will replace them.
  • Recall intervals extended – dentally fit patients seen every 18–24 months.
  • Payment changes – hourly rates rise slightly, but sustainability concerns remain.
  • Care packages introduced – with added expectations for treatment and follow-ups.
  • Access portal dropped – but patient ownership and conversion challenges remain.

These changes aim to improve access and prevention, but they also raise big questions for practice owners about income, patient flow and long-term viability.
