Watch this on-demand webinar with dentists Nigel Suggett and Megan Mulholland in conversation with Nigel Jones, Sales and Marketing Director at Practice Plan as they uncover the truth about NHS conversions.

About the webinar:

There are many perceived barriers that stand in the way of dentists making the life-changing decision to move from NHS to private dentistry.

Nigel Jones, Sales and Marketing Director at Practice Plan, Dr Nigel Suggett, principal dentist at Seaham Smiles and Brunswick Dental and Dr Megan Mulholland, dentist at Seaham Smiles, discussed the most common barriers that stop dentists from handing back their NHS contracts, including:

  • I’ll lose too many patients.
  • The local press will turn against me.
  • My team will resist the change.
  • I’m concerned that my Health Board will make things difficult for me.
  • I’d feel guilty about leaving NHS dentistry – I want to give something back to society.
  • I’m worried that I’m not good enough to be a private dentist.

Nigel, Nigel and Megan chatted through these points, assessing just how significant they are, their knowledge and experiences of these barriers, and what advice they would give to others considering making the move from NHS to private dentistry.

Please note, this webinar was recorded live on Thursday 25th January 2024.

About the speakers:

Nigel Jones, Sales and Marketing Director, Practice Plan

Nigel Jones has been working in the dental sector for over 30 years. He has a special interest in the development and future of NHS dentistry in the UK.

His knowledge and passion for dentistry has led him to be named in the Dentistry Top 50 of influential people within the profession.

Dr Nigel Suggett, Principal Dentist, Seaham Smiles and Brunswick Dental

Nigel is the principal dentist of two small to medium sized practices. As Nigel changed his practice to be mainly implant based, he needed to reduce his NHS commitment and so he made the decision to stop seeing NHS patients. Over the next 5 years the other dentists have gradually followed Nigel’s lead and now both practices are undergoing a full NHS to private conversion. 90% of the work that Nigel himself carries out is now implant based.

Megan Mulholland, Dentist, Seaham Smiles

Megan graduated from Newcastle University in 2018, and worked in a high needs NHS dental practice for a couple of years before joining Seaham Smiles in late 2020. Megan had a predominantly NHS client base initially, and was increasing her Practice Plan members before making the decision to fully convert all adult patients to private in April 2023. The main reason for this was the ability to increase the time spent with patients, not having stressful targets to hit, and making the working day more enjoyable.
