Eddie Crouch, Chair of the British Dental Association (BDA) Principal Executive Committee, and Nigel Jones, Practice Plan’s Sales and Marketing Director, reflect on a tumultuous 18 months in NHS dentistry and consider what 2023 holds for the profession.
With the UK having five health secretaries and three Prime Ministers since June 2021, Eddie and Nigel consider the impact of this instability and inconsistent leadership on the dental profession. In addition, they discuss the recruitment and retention issues that have plagued the industry throughout 2022 and continue to do so into this year, including the growing pressure on practices to increase wages, despite an ongoing cost-of-living crisis and recession.
Eddie and Nigel also consider the impact of the July 2022 announcement which was billed as the ‘first significant change to the dental contract since its introduction’, which the BDA’s Shawn Charlwood deemed as “modest, marginal changes, that would not fix the rotten foundations this service is built on”*.
The hosts discuss the possible light at the end of the tunnel which came from a couple of key announcements that were made towards the end of the year, including the consultation outcomes regarding international General Dental Council (GDC) registrations, enabling the GDC to modernise their process and make overseas registration easier; and the new parliamentary inquiry that was launched by the Health and Social Care Committee of MPs, to examine the extent to which the current NHS dental contract disincentivises dentists from taking on new patients.
The big question is, will 2023 be the year for stability and progress for NHS dentistry?

Nigel Jones is the Sales and Marketing Director at Practice Plan and has been working in the
dental sector for over 30 years. He has a special interest in the development and future of NHS dentistry in the UK.
His knowledge and passion for dentistry has led him to become a trusted voice, offering invaluable advice on how to strategically and successfully run a practice.
Eddie Crouch has been Chair of the BDA Principal Executive Committee since September 2020.
Before that, he served as deputy chair between 2014 and 2020 and past Chair of Central Counties Branch of the British Dental Association.
He works in two practices in Birmingham and is Vice Chair of the Birmingham Local Dental Committee.
