World Environment Day, celebrated annually on 5th June, is the United Nations’ principal vehicle for encouraging awareness and action for the protection of our environment. This year, the event will be hosted by the Republic of Korea and will focus on the pressing issue of plastic pollution. The theme, “Ending Plastic Pollution,” highlights the urgent need to address the all-pervasive presence of plastics in our ecosystems, food chains, and even within human bodies.
The day presents a unique opportunity for teams to reflect on the environmental impact of dental practices and to implement sustainable changes that contribute to global efforts against plastic pollution.
The Environmental Footprint of Dentistry
Dentistry, like many healthcare sectors, makes a significant contribution to environmental degradation. Key areas of concern include:
- Plastic Waste: The use of single-use plastics in gloves, masks, syringes, and packaging contributes to landfill
- Energy Consumption: Dental practices consume energy through lighting, sterilisation equipment, and heating/cooling systems
- CO2 Emissions: Travel to and from the practice, for both patients and staff, adds to carbon emissions
- Water Usage: Dental practices make substantial use of water for procedures and sterilising equipment.
By recognising these impacts, we can take steps to implement meaningful changes. Here are some suggestions:
- Reduce Single-Use Plastics: Transition to reusable or biodegradable alternatives where possible. For instance, consider using reusable stainless steel impression trays and chairside rinse cups and opt for glass containers for storage
- Implement Recycling Programmes: Establish clear recycling protocols within the practice. Ensure that staff are trained to segregate waste appropriately. If they’re unsure where to put something, it will just end up in general waste!
- Energy Efficiency: Upgrade to energy-efficient lighting and appliances. Ensure equipment is maintained regularly so it continues to work at optimal efficiency to reduce energy use.
- Water Conservation: Install water-saving devices and regularly check for leaks. Educate staff on the importance of conserving water during procedures.
- Sustainable Procurement: Source materials and products from environmentally responsible suppliers. Choose items with minimal packaging and ones made from recycled materials. Lobby your supplier to include as many environmentally friendly products as possible
- Promote Green Transport: Encourage staff and patients to use public transport, cycle, or walk to appointments. Consider providing bike racks and information on public transport routes to make the choice easier for people
- Do it Digital: Cut down on paper usage by adopting digital record-keeping, appointment scheduling, and patient communications wherever possible
- Staff Training and Engagement: Make sure the whole team is on board through regular training on sustainability practices and involve them in decision-making processes to foster a culture of environmental responsibility.
Engaging with the Community
As a practice you can extend your impact by engaging with the broader community:
- Educational Workshops: Host sessions on oral health and environmental sustainability to emphasise the link between the two
- School Collaborations: Team up with local schools to educate children on the importance of dental hygiene and looking after the environment
- Community Clean-Up Events: Organise or take part in local clean-up drives, such as litter picks, to demonstrate your commitment to environmental stewardship.
National Initiatives
There are national organisations that offer resources and frameworks to support sustainable dentistry:
- Sustainable Dentistry Toolkit: Developed by the Centre for Sustainable Healthcare, this toolkit provides guidance for dental practices aiming to reduce their environmental impact
- Dental Susnet: An online network for dental professionals to share experiences and strategies related to sustainability
- Clinical Guidelines for Environmental Sustainability in Dentistry: These guidelines offer a structured approach to integrating sustainability into dental practice management.
Celebrating World Environment Day 2025
To mark World Environment Day, dental practices can:
- Raise Awareness: Use your social media channels or develop displays in the practice to educate patients about plastic pollution and how to be more sustainable in their everyday lives
- Hold a ‘Green Week’: Choose a week to focus on sustainability, with daily themes and activities that allow both staff and patients to get involved
- Team up with Local Organisations: Partner with environmental groups in your area to support broader community initiatives.
World Environment Day 2025 is an opportunity for dental teams to lead by example by integrating sustainable practices that not only protect the environment but also contribute to enhanced patient care and community well-being.
By ‘thinking global and acting local’ and committing to these changes, we can all do our bit to help reduce plastic pollution, ensuring a healthier planet for future generations.
